Oldish Lava Lamps Are the Best

'Trends' have been observed in a trend of coming and going. One day a particular style or design is 'in' only to wake up the next morning to discover that it is 'out' as quickly as it came. This phenomenon appears to be pleasing sometimes but the others it is simply not. However, things that were popular decades ago seem to be in a 'trend' of coming back with a super fast speed.

Floor Lava Lamps

Same is the case with an item from the 60's, which had disappeared into the pit once but now is back with a full swing. We are talking about the lava lamps. As far as I am concerned this entry would have been remained unsaid.

Floor Lava Lamps

During my growing up period I saw these lava lamps with many friends of mine. I remember thinking it to be the coolest thing in fashions then, that I had ever seen. My elder sister, in her apartment used to have lava lamps too. My memory serves me for the moments when I asked for lava lamps for my birthday and even for Christmas but unfortunately no one got me any. Mom gave me a reason that we did not have extra plug in for lava lamps. She also believed that they were ugly that is why I couldn't even had one in a different corner of the house. Well, that was her opinion. As far as I am concerned I absolutely loved them as a kid and can't be more happy to have them back now that I am a grown up and can afford one on my own.

Nevertheless, even as a kid I couldn't remember the temptation of having one of my own lamps and reading by its light at night. So what I did was that I pulled out the money that I had saved through a babysitting job and went out for shopping with a girlfriend. Clearance was offered on one shop so I bought one. Afterwards I brought it home and made it up to my room, where I had in my mind that it would deliver a nice glow from my closet and mom will never notice.

However, I found my mom right on the point that we did not have much outlets in my room, so, I took the extension cord from the store room and pulled it through the back of my dresser into the closet. I placed the lamp at the top of the box that it came in and turned it on. The color appeared to be an ugly one that is why it was on clearance. I still had a thinking that this brownish orange blob rise and fall it great to watch. In a while mom called me downstairs to have my dinner. Shortly after that we heard a crash and my cat was visible with puffed out tail and she was running down the steps. She looked shocked hurled herself under the coach. That crash was actually brought down by knocking over my newly bought lamp.

My mom took about a minute to figure out what had happened and why that liquid was flowing through the stairs. Then, only to confirm her doubts, she also saw the box. After that I was asked to clean the mess of course which I smugly did.

Now, whenever I think of that particular day and my obsession with the lamp I can't help but to smile. My appetite for antiques has never been satisfied though. I can't wait to go out and get a the lava lamp again.

Keeping Your World in Motion Using Lava Lamps

Anyone who lived through the 1960s is familiar with lava lamps and what they meant for that bohemian, free love culture. Lava lamps were created 40 years ago, not to be a main light source for families or businesses, but to act as a room decoration.

Floor Lava Lamps

Lava lamps are tall lamps that look like two triangles put together with one point facing up and another facing down. These motion lamps use heat to move wax within the lamp around the surface of the lamp. The blobs don't actually produce much light, but they do create a funky mood in a room. Lava lamps come in all different sizes and colors.

Floor Lava Lamps

Some lava lamps are designed in such a way that they look like stars are running through the lamp. There are other lava lamps that use different colors to create mixed colors. As the LAVA company moved through the years, it adjusted its lava lamps to suit the tastes of new generations.

For a while, it was rather challenging to find lava lamps. Though they were still being sold, some consumers were having a hard time finding local retailers that sold the lamps. If you're having difficulty finding the lava lamp of your dreams, try the LAVA Web site. This site has lamps and lamp parts as well as advice on how to care for your lava lamp.

Trouble Shooting Lava Lamps

Lava lamps are really cool accessories, but they can cause frustration for some users. To keep your lava lamp frustration at a minimum, try some of these tips. Sometimes lava lamps get cloudy. You'll know if your lava lamp is cloudy because the color will be muted and blurry. This tends to happen if the lamp has been dropped, shaken or moved while the blobs were warm. These sudden actions can disrupt the wax formations. If you drop your lava lamp, turn it off immediately. Wait until the wax cools and settles at the bottom and then turn it back on. When the wax breaks up, turn it off again. This may clear up the problem.

Also, make sure to keep your lava lamps out of direct sunlight. If you don't, the color of your lava lamps may fade.

Gifts For Hippie Girlfriends - The Lava Lamp

While the lava lamp is often associated with the "cheesiness" of the 1970s, the style itself is actually quite an attractive and underrated one. It makes a wonderful gift, especially for girlfriends. In this article, I will discuss what is so great about the lamp and why you should consider getting one for yourself or your significant other.

Floor Lava Lamps

Quality of Light: One of the primary difficulties with most lighting is that the light is very harsh. The use of a light bulb creates a single source of light that is harsh to look at. This has the result that there will be spots that will be uncomfortable to look at in your home. Lava lamps, on the other hand, provide an extremely diffuse light, that is neither harsh to look at nor does it create any glare.

Floor Lava Lamps

Color of Light: The light of a lava lamp is completely flexible, as it comes in a wide array of colors. This is wonderful for providing accents in someone's apartment or creating a style of light that best suits the person. If your girlfriend enjoys a bright, sunlight quality, blue light can enhance this feeling. On the other hand, if you want warmer, more romantic tones, then go with something red. Whatever you do, though, don't use green. It makes everyone look sickly.

Motion: One of the aspects of light that we have lost in the modern world is motion. Moving light mesmerizes us, and gives an entire room character. This is why we spend so much time watching campfires. The motion of a lava lamp, coupled with stronger overhead lighting, provides a more natural sense of motion to the light in the room, imitating the natural light diffused by tree branches or from fire.

Romance: As a romantic gift, a lava lamp is especially strong. When used on their own, they provide the same romantic lighting provided by candles, but brighter and without the fire hazards. A reddish lamp will bring out skin tones, while the motion will accentual shadows.

Vintage Lighting: Action Lamps, Stained Glass Lighting and Lava Lamps Are Here to Stay!

Since the early part of the 20th century lighting designers have created lamps and fixtures to captivate our senses. Much like the tranquility one feels staring at a warming fire or the excitement one feels staring at the spectacle of a lightening storm, accent lamps - those with colorful stained glass patterns, mythical figures, pastoral scenes or action, evoke our emotions.

Floor Lava Lamps

While illumination is a function of lighting, many of the lamps of the sensory ilk, including lava lamps of the 50's and 60's, and animated action lamps of the 20's and again in the 1950's, favor more the sense of accent, entertainment and decoration than the practical function of task lighting.

Floor Lava Lamps

Static yet colorful stained glass lighting appeals as eye candy. Beautiful patterns of Wisteria, Iris, and nature captivate, whether lit or not. Not much has changed since pioneer Louis Comfort Tiffany introduced his first stained glass art lamps more than 100 years ago. Vintage original Tiffany fixtures can be bought for more than the cost of a down payment for a San Francisco home.

Motion lamps, like the animated lamps of the 1920's, feature popular scenes such as water cascading over Niagra Falls or flames burning around a log. It's no wonder why advertisers sought to reintroduce action lamps again in the 1950's. In the 50's these moving lamps were brought back to life featuring Cole Swimwear models or popular snacks and drinks such as popcorn or coke and would rest upon the counter of a bar for all to enjoy!

Lava lamps also captured our fascination with colorful lighting and movement. Today, these, and the above mentioned vintage lamps, continue to be popular. Collectors may seek higher valued originals, whereas the homeowner may be just as happy with a modern day reproduction. Adding to the feel of a place, these kinds of fixtures are here to stay!

Giant Lava Lamps Can Make Your Room Look Impressive

There had been a success story of a company in 1960's and 1970's. The company was Lamps manufacturing company. This company took rights of selling a product which had occupied huge market of the world. This product was named as Lava lamp. This product was designed and made by an Englishman Edward Craven-Walker. He made this product after a great struggle of 15 years in laboratory.

Floor Lava Lamps

Now with the introduction of Giant Lava Lamps these lamps can be used for both decoration and for the illumination purposes. There is an interesting rise and fall of wax in this new huge lamp which looks quite amazing. This wax converts into fumes and give a beautiful look by its movement in the water. Everyone wants that their house should look beautiful. Lava lamps were designed keeping in view the interest of people. These lamps are combination of water and wax. Wax that is used is in solid form and in variety of colors.

Floor Lava Lamps

Wax is usually denser as compare to water, but in warmer conditions it is less dense as compare to water. So as they are heated wax start to move upwards in the lamp. This looks very beautiful. After using the lamp, when it is switched off, wax takes one hour to get settled down in the lamp.

So in these Giant Lava Lamps wax shows a great view by rise and fall in the water. Wax is given heat by the ordinary way that is by filament as seen in bulbs. After the usage the wax goes down and become solid again and water remains there. And no color is seen again. It takes an hour to get wax turn solid and to settle down at the bottom of the glass container.

There is a large industry of these lamps in the world. Now even people are also manufacturing these lamps in house, so home manufacturing industry is also expanding. There is much risk involved in making them and using them also. For the manufacturing of the lamp, water and isopropyl alcohol are mixed at the first stage and then mineral oil is also mixed. As the water and the mineral oil is to be denser and should have a specific gravity, so sodium chloride in also added in it.

If we see these Giant Lava Lamps every one can say that these lamps are easy to manufacture. If we make in depth analysis of how these lamps have been manufactured, it can be seen that law of conservation of energy has been used. It means that there is pure conversion of energy from one type to another. In these lamps heat energy is converted into kinetic energy.

Now the big problem in this world is energy crises, people want to save hydro bills to save money. Lava lamps are great innovations for this period. These lamps can save energy, give maximum light and add beauty to houses. They are great pieces for decoration.

There are many advantages of these Giant Lava Lamps. We can't say that there is a disadvantage of it, but these lamps should be used with proper care. When switched on, try not to shake the lamp, this caution should be kept in mind.

Lava Lamps May Be Back in Modern Floor Lamps

Fashion and decorating trends come and go. There are some trends that we're really happy to see go. and as far as I am concerned. the lava lamp is one of them. But now. that famous sixties trend has now reappeared on the scene.

Floor Lava Lamps

When I was a kid. a lot of my friends had lava lamps. At that time. I thought they were just the coolest item to own. My older sister had lava lamps in her apartment so I thought it was a really mature thing to have. I begged my parents for one. first for my birthday and then for Christmas. but I never got one. My mother was way too practical; the reason I could not have one was because there was no extra outlet in my room. I was willling to give up my regular lamp. but that idea didn't fly. Neither did the idea that we could put the lava lamps all over the house. My ill-informed mother thought they were ugly.

Floor Lava Lamps

I had to live by my parents decision. but the appeal of a lava lamp was all consuming. I finally saved enough money of my own from babysitting and dragged a girlfriend to go shopping with me for one. I found a store with a lava lamp on a clearance rack and became the proud owner of one. I figured I could keep it in the closet and it would add an interesting glow to my room. but my mother would not know about it. Since I did not have another outlet. I had to drag an extension cord and plug it into another outlet. I was thrilled with excitement as I put the lava lamp in the closet. using the box it came in as a table. I turned it on. and it was one of the ugliest colors I have ever seen. Maybe that is why it was on the clearance rack? Still. watching the brownish orange blobs float around inside the glass was a thrill. Just them. I was called down to dinner. and while we were eating. wer heard a load crash and then the cat came flying downstairs with a strange looking tail. She was so scared she fled beneath the sofa and wouldn't come out. Of course. the crash was my precious lava lamp hitting the floor when the cat stepped through the extension cord. It didn't take long for my mother to figure out what the strange liquid on the floor of my bedroom was. A terse "Clean it up" said it all. Well. a lava lamp does not have lava in it. but it sure has some strange liquid in it. It was very greasy and smelly and every time I tried to pick up the blobs. they escaped through my fingers. Two hours later the result was passable. but I could not sleep in my room due to the putrid odor. I had to 'fess up to my mom. who said she was very dissapointed in me. Honestly. I was a good kid. and my mom had never said that to me before.

Today when I see a lava lamp I cannot understand what the appeal of that ugly thing was. especially since it caused me so much trouble and only led me to the sadness of my mom's disappointment.

Floor Lamps For A Modern Decor

In terms of interior design the 1960s and 1970s were not decades that particularly made a positive impact. There is however one 1960s piece of decorative kit that holds a special place in my heart. I am referring to the omnipresent lava lamps. Their viscous lumps of wax came in a variety of psychedelic colors. You could find them in purple, lime green, pink and yellow amongst other shades. Lava lamp would become my main focal point whenever there was one around.

Floor Lava Lamps

Whenever I was in a room with one, my attention went to it automatically, as if I was hypnotized by the suspended, vibrantly colored. I found them to be a completely innocuous pleasure and rather relaxing, especially if combined with Indian music and the scent of burning incense.

Floor Lava Lamps

People my age buy the lava lamps that are manufactured nowadays out of nostalgia while youngsters are attracted to their retro look. They may be considered tacky and ordinary today but I find them curiously soothing. Maybe it is because they were invented in more buoyant times.

They are still being made today, bought by my generation for reasons of nostalgia and by young people who love the retro look of them. I know they're trashy and unsubtle but there's something strangely comforting about them. Perhaps they represent a more optimistic age. I may even possibly purchase one though it would not really sit in well with the rest of my décor. I guess it could be a curio or period piece, depending on how tongue in cheek I'm being when justifying it to my surprised friends who buy all their home deco gear from Ikea. Maybe it is not such a great idea after all: I probably wouldn't get much work done if the trance-like state they used to put me in is anything to go by.

Nowadays you can also buy Plasma Lamps, but they are colder, soulless and far less personable than the good old lava lamp. My all-time favorite lava lamp color is purple as they make me think of Jimi Hendrix' Purple Haze. Maybe psychology students should look at the links between someone's favorite lava lamp color and their personality.

Craven Walker, the inventor of the lava lamp, chanced upon his discovery by accident and would not have had any idea as to his invention future cult status. Though lava lamps are harmless fun you should always read the manufacturers instructions: it proved a tragic mistake for a young man back in 2004. He was so eager for his lamp to come to temperature that he placed it on top of his stove to speed things up: the glass casing exploded and he was killed by a shard of heart that went straight through his heart. I have also heard of DIY lava lamps but this doesn't sound like a very safe thing to do at home!

Floor Lamps For A Modern Decor

Are Lava Lamps Better Than Plasma Lamps

In the 1960s and 1970s the lava lamp were simply everywhere. It was one object I can clearly recall having great fondness for. They were made of wax and available in every possible color. The idea that there were simply so many colors which, seemed to be floating in the air was eye catching and could keep one involve for eternity. They had a particular relaxing touch about themselves which highlighted their harmlessness and fun.

Floor Lava Lamps

Though these Lava Lamps have an old history but they are swirling back in fashion now. People belonging to the 60s and 70s buy it particularly because it reminds them of the gone old days. There is always something strangely soothing about them which tend to put one in a tranquil trance. If given a choice I might even go for one though it would hardly match up with the vaguely fashioned decoratives of today.

Floor Lava Lamps

With the advancement in technology and the various inventions the Plasma lamps are getting increasingly popular. They are more scientific in nature but the Lava Lamps are a lot more personal. They give a feeling of being alive and possessing a spirit into them. Besides it also makes predicting the owner's personality a lot easier. Whatever color or style these lamps have says something unique about an individual's taste. Infact, coming to think of it, these lamps should be taken under a keen study by the various psychologists to carry out their research work. I am sure it will be of great help to them.

It is said that, Craven Walker, the inventor of the Lava Lamps accidentally stumbled upon these lamps once. But then almost all the great inventions in the world have been evolved through accidents. I am sure he could possibly have no idea that he would be creating a masterpiece.

Though Lava lamps are meant for decoration but the warning label they carry has some special significance. Don't let the excitement to see it work take over you because patience is the key word. Once a guy out of curiosity and impatience couldn't wait long enough to let the lamp heat slowly and placed it on a stove to quicken the process. This made the glass bottle inside expand and explode piercing a piece right through his heart and causing his death. Thus, you need to be careful with them because as good as they may look they carry a slightly volatile air about them.

Lava Lamps For Sale - Lamps - They Decorate and Illuminate Your Home

As the title suggests, lava lamps for sale are special type of lamps whose primary purpose is decoration and not illumination. They constitute slow and interesting rise and fall of different shaped blobs of wax. Differently shaped balls of wax in the lamp slowly rise and fall like lava, creating a mesmerizing, almost hallucinatory effect and hence their name.

Floor Lava Lamps

The bulb is normally of 25 to 40 watts and it generally takes 20 to 60 minutes for enough heating of the lamp to cause the wax blobs to rise. These lamps fare considered to be great soothers and are used for mood lighting.

Floor Lava Lamps

These lamps were invented by Edward Craven-Walker in 1963, whose patent was bought by 2 entrepreneurs in 1965.

As with any decorative item, the primary factors to be considered with them are design and colour. Their are many colour variations available to you. Another point of variation is that the wax can be transparent, translucent, or even opaque. The wax is usually mixed with other substances such as carbon tetrachloride.

An alternative to these lamps has also hit the market - The glitter lamp, these have sparkly like confetti (rather than wax) in the liquid and have a motion which resembles that of the lava lamps but are not considered true lava lamps. However, they provide a great advantage in that they start up in under a minute rather than 30 minutes.

Although they can be made at home and there are methods publicly available to do so, it is actually quite difficult to reproduce a classic lamp. The reason for this is that manufacturing these lamps requires lot of precision and care. In effect, each lava lamp for sale is equivalent to be custom-made. Also, the ingredients, in the wax and the liquid (commonly water) that are used by manufacturers are closely guarded secrets.

Hence, even though many sites talk about producing a lava lamp at home, it is best advised to buy one from various places that offer lava lamps for sale like local stores and online websites.

Red Lava Lamp - The Red Lava in Clear Liquid Effect

If you want something retro but not the kind that you see in a fortune teller's cabin, the red lava lamp is exactly for you. Plug the lamp in and stay entertained for hours. A 10 inch lamp has a glazed silver finish and is small enough to fit anywhere whether it is your workplace or home. The model that has red lava floating in a clear liquid is one sight you do not want to miss. They are available for as low as US .99.

Floor Lava Lamps

The lamp's working principle is pretty simple. The red wax and the clear liquid have the same density when they are unplugged. They do not mix. Once you heat the red wax, its density is lowered and it rises. When it rises, it is cooled and falls back down.

Floor Lava Lamps

This rising and falling motion of the lamp is a sight so enigmatic, you find yourself staring at it even if you do not want to. Go out and buy yourself one of these lamps instead of trying to make one at home. They are cheap enough.

If you were there in the 70s, you would know why lava lamps are all the rage. It helps you relate to the pop, rock and roll revolution, the rapidly changing fashion, the designs and décor and how everything in that time had to do with feeling good. Music clubs and stores display them to create the same feel- good aura about their place. Not to mention, it gets nostalgic too. The fascinating movements of the lava, even has kids drooling all over them. Same goes for the adults. And for those did not know about the existence of the lava lamp, how about love at first sight eh?

The aluminum top and base give it a classy retro finish. Red lamps are all the rage because they mimic the original lava color. The lamp boasts typical lava lamp design and the same relaxing aura that comes with it. Some of the red lamps can be 16.3 inches tall and weigh around 58 0z which is roughly 6 pounds. Even after 40 years, the lava lamp is found to be just as fascinating as before. It has not lost its soothing, mood-altering touch.

However, most of the users complain that the wax loses its vigor after a few days and takes longer than necessary to warm up to do the dance. This certainly is a disappointment for the addicted user. Then, eventually it stops moving at all. Then the lamp is of no use. Most of them can not help but wonder that why haven't they perfected it after all those years. Most of the user reviews complain about the same thing.

Sometimes the light will not turn on, well then you can just forget about the lava coming to life. People have associated this problem with the red wax as the problem persisted with even the replacements they obtained. But the red lava lamp makes a very thoughtful present when it comes to birthday and Christmas presents. Everybody loves a lava lamp no matter what the flaws are.

Lava Lamps Are Back As Modern Floor Lamps

The era of the sixties and seventies will not go down in history as the era of good taste. But among all the crazy trends of those decades is one that I still hold a fond remembrance for: the lava lamp. If you are too young to remember lava lamps. I'll describe one. Picture a wiggly glass tube. filled with slimy liquids that are in the most incredible colors of purple. neon green. hot pink. etc. Lumps of some blobby material floated through this mass of color as it undulated in the tube. Sounds lovely. no? Yet. whenever I was around a lava lamp. I would be mesmerized by the slowly swirling colors and the floating blobs. I found it very relaxing and would further enhance this experience with the aroma of joss sticks and the sound of sitar music. I felt that lava lamps were a harmless way to relax and chill out.

Floor Lava Lamps

Lava lamps are still available today. and I imagine they are being purchased by children of the sixties to recreate that era or by young people of today who enjoy a retro look. Despite their inherent ugliness. I still find them relaxing and oddly comforting. Maybe I equate them with an age when I was still young. optimistic and had dreams. I have even considered buying one. knowing full well that it would clash with everything in my home. I don't know how I would explain it to my cool. Ikea-decorated friends. The appeal of contrast? An ironic comment? In thinking about it. I realize it would not be such a good idea. Back in those days. I could afford to sit aroud in a dreamlike state; today. I have way too much to do. The modern version of the lava lamp is the Plasma Lamp. They do not have the appeal of lava lamps to me. They seem like something out of a science lab or clinical experiment. Lava lamps have a personal appeal. almost with a soul of their own. The best ones were the purple ones. especially if viewed while listening to Jimi Hendrix' Purple Haze. I believe you can make a valid character judgement about someone based on their preferred lava lamp color. Some psychologist should conduct a study on it.

Floor Lava Lamps

The lava lamp was invented by Craven Walker. and it is rumored that. like most great inventions. like vulcanization and post-it notes. it came about by accident. He was certainly not aware that he invented the symbol of a culture and an era. Even though lava lamps are intended to be fun. make sure you read any of the warning labels on a lava lamp. One impatient (and stupid) man failed to do this. with dire consequences. In 2004. this young gentleman bought a lava lamp and wanted it to start its bubbling twists and turns right away. Instead of waiting for it to warm up normally. he put it on a stove burner. and the glass exploded and a shard of it pierced his heart. There are even those who try to make their own lava lamps. and they are really looking for trouble.
